Submission filter

Submissions made to your goldroo directory are automatically reviewed by a submission filter before being added to your review queue.

You can adjust the settings of your submission filter from your Dashboard:

  • Access your admin panel.
  • Click on Submission filter.

The standard settings are fine for most installations. The best way to find out whether they need adjusting is by making a few submissions yourself after your directory has been set up, and see the filter at work.

If you use your goldroo software for a non-English website, you will have to change the settings.

Words
Banned/Required Words:
  • Add any words or phrases that you do not allow in any submission
  • By adding a + sign before a word, then the word will be required in a submission, for example if you only accept submissions from hotels, then you could add +hotel
Incorrect Tense:
  • Enter any words here that will ask the submitter to write in the third person
  • Submitters should not use words like I, me, mine, our, we etc
Suspect Words:
  • Add a list of words that you only allow if there are not too many of them, to make sure that submissions are written objectively
  • This can prevent submissions like the best, greatest and cheapest discount store with the lowest prices
  • You can set the number of Suspect Words allowable later on
Limits
Disabled:
  • You can disable the submission filter
  • Only the Banned/Required Words filter will be operational
Title Length:
  • Maximum number of words in the title
Description Length:
Capitalization Limit:
  • Prevent submissions where nearly all words are capitalized
Title fragments:
  • Control the number of fragments in the title of a submission
  • A fragment is a number of words separated by a comma, full stop etc
Description Fragments:
  • Maximum number of fragments in the description of a submission; an error will tell the submitter to adjust the submission before it can be accepted
  • This is useful to stop submissions of keyword list for example
Description Fragments Warn:
  • Preferred number of fragments; a warning only will invite the submitter to re-write the submission
Fragment Distance:
  • If fragments are the same length, then there is the possibilty that some text submitted is being copied and submitted twice in the same description, for example to make up the minimum word requirement
  • Control when the filter decides when text has been copied
Suspect Words Allowed:
  • The number of words from your Suspect Words list before the submitter will be asked to re-write the submission
Word Repetition:
  • Prevent word repetition

Adding a listing

Listings can either be added by visitor submissions, or by the administrator or reviewer as detailed below.

To add a new listing through your admin panel:

  • Access your admin panel.
  • Navigate to the category where you wish to add the new listing.
  • Click the Add New Listing link.
Note: If the link is not available then the category is currently locked, to add a listing you will need to edit the category and unlock it.
  • Fill in the Entry Title: this is the text a visitor clicks to go to the listed website or the detail page for the listing.
  • Fill in the Entry Description: this text is shown on the category page where the listing is shown.
  • Fill in Keywords for the listing. When a visitor performs a search, the words in the Entry Title, Entry Description, Keywords and the Full Description fields are used to return the relevant search results.
  • Enter a Website Address: this will link the Entry Title to that URL.
    Note: Include http://
Note: If left blank, then the Entry Title will link to the detail page for the listing.
  • Optional: enter a Reciprocal Address if the linked website is linking back to your site. This link will be checked every month to see if the link is still pointing at your site.
  • Enter a contact Email address for the listing.
Note: This is optional but must be entered if you want to send automated notifications that a listing is about to expire.
  • Select the Type of listing, by default there are four types of listing defined which are shown within categories in the following order:
    • Priority with Reciprocal
    • Priority
    • Standard with Reciprocal
    • Standard
  • Enter the day, month and year that a priority listing will expire and become its equivalent standard listing. If you have disabled auto de-ranking then this field has no effect.
Note: Entering 00/00/0000 will stop the listing ever being de-ranked.
  • Check the Visible box, if you fail to do this the listing will be added to the database but will not be shown on your website.
Note: this allows you to temporary hide a listing, or make it inactive without deleting it.
  • Entry Thumbnail: you can use the "Browse" button to select a JPG file from your computer to use as the listing's thumbnail.
  • Unless you have disabled detail pages, entering text into the Full Description field will add a detailed description to the entry.
  • Optional: Enter a password which the user can use to modify the listing later.
  • If voting is enabled then you can tick the Votes box to reset the counters.
  • When you click Update Entry Information the information you have entered will be saved to the database.
  • Fill any of the other extension fields in as required.
